The Curriculum
We plan and deliver an exciting, dynamic curriculum that caters for a range of learning styles and interests. We believe in educating the whole child, and providing experiences which educate the mind.

English
Each class has a daily English lesson, where children are taught the skills that will help them to become effective readers and writers. Reading is of great importance to us at Alma . Children are encouraged to read a range of high quality texts. Each class has a daily guided reading session. In addition to this, children can borrow books from our well stocked library. Children regularly take home books to share with their parents. Many children have reading partners supplied by our business partners Ernst & Young. We are keen to enlist parents as reading partners.

Mathematics
Daily Maths lessons provide children with an opportunity to practise their mental recall. Here, teachers may introduce key concepts or provide opportunity for practising and applying previous learning. Wherever possible, we try to make maths experience based with opportunities for practical, hands on learning.

Basic Skills

Every morning children complete a basic skills session. This lasts 15 minutes. The focus is on learning number facts, spelling, phonics, and handwriting.  Children are able to practise these skills & to use and apply them so that they are better prepared for learning in school.

Ready Steady Learn!

Big Writing

This is a new programme for alma that focuses on improving children's literacy. It has four key elements:

V.C.O.P.

Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers & Punctuation

Children really enjoy this programme especially ' Kung Fu Punctuation' . Children learn exactly what they need to do to improve their writing.

Science
Science through practical investigations and are encouraged to develop enquiring minds and scientific skills.

Foundation subjects
The core curriculum is enriched through a range of subjects which allow children to learn about the world we live in and their place in it. Our Library, Art, drama and music rooms support teaching and allow learning in a thematic way. We also teach Spanish.

Information Communication Technology
The school makes good use of technology. It has a well equipped with a large ICT suite with additional computers in classrooms which are used to enhance teaching and encourage children more effectively across the curriculum.

Assessment and Testing
Teachers use a range of assessment strategies to find out how children are progressing, and to inform their future teaching. Pupils in Year 2 and Year 6 sit Statutory Assessment tests (SATs)

Early Years
Children in our Reception class are able to learn about the world we live in through play. We provide a range of settings and activities to allow children to explore and develop early literacy and number skills. A great emphasis is also placed on creativity and communication, with child initiated activities generating discussion and learning opportunities.

School Assemblies
Children meet daily to take part in a school assembly. These follow themes with stories and songs which allow children to understand spiritual aspects of life. They draw on key events and festivals in the five key faiths promoting respect, tolerance and understanding of others. We promote opportunities for reflection so that we all have time to reflect the diverse community that we live in. Assemblies are an important time of togetherness in the school day, when children and teachers come together as a school or key stage.
